2003 WORLD TAEKWONDO CHAMPIONSHIPS RESULTS.

Male - 54 kg
1. CHOI, Yeon-Ho (KOR)
2. GREEN, Paul (GBR)
3. MAMMADOV, Zahid (AZE)
3. CRUZ, Roberto (PHI)

Yeon-Ho CHOI (KOR), 2003 World Champion (Fin -54 kg, male)
I had no thoughts, I felt nothing when I knew that I had won. I just felt empty. It felt great to have defended my title, but when I won for the first time, it felt somewhat better. Then it was the first time that I had won a big competition. Coming here, I didnt feel pressure. But it was a hard competition for me, because I had to loose 8 kilograms (to keep his weight category). It was hard to keep the weight down here. There was no sauna, for example.

Female - 47 kg
1. YAGUE, Brigida (ESP)
2. YING, Wang (CHN)
3. PHAM, Thucuc (GER)
3. CONTRERAS, Dalia (VEN)

Brigida Yague (ESP), 2003 World Champion (Fin -47 kg, female)
I feel wonderful after winning tonight. My adversary was a lot taller than me, but that meant she was also slower. So this worked to my advantage eventually. I was second at the 2001 World Championships, and now I got my first (senior) World title.

Male - 58 kg
1. YEN, Chu Mu (TPE)
2. KANJOBEH, Behzad Khodadad (IRI)
3. KO, Seok-Hwa (KOR)
3. THACKREY, Tim (USA)

Chu Mu YEN (TPE), 2003 World Champion (Fly -58 kg, male)
It was incredible that I am World Champion. It was a hard fight, I didnt have much strength left. But I was mentally strong, and the support of the Chinese Taipei team really helped me to do my job. I want to thank my coach Mr. Zhang. It is my first World title.

Female - 51 kg
1. LEE, Ji-Hye (KOR)
2. LABRADA, Yanelis (CUB)
3. VOREN, Elisha (USA)
3. YAOWAPA, Boorapolchal (THA)

Ji-Hye LEE (KOR), 2003 World Champion (Fly -51 kg, female)
It was difficult for me to make the National team of Korea, and so I am especially happy to have won here in Germany. I never have been to Worlds before. I was in very good shape at the beginning, but then in the quarter final I had some problems. Finally I was able to pull myself together. My first thoughts after winning went to my parents and to my coach.

Male - 62 kg
1. HSIUNG, Huang-Chih, (TPE)
2. BADIA, Omar (ESP)
3. LOPEZ, Peter (USA)
3. GHOLAMZADEH, Omid (IRI)

Chih-Hsiung HUANG (TPE), 2003 World Champion (Bantam -62 kg, male)
I was so excited when I knew that I had won. I wanted to win so much. At the last World Championships in 2001, I lost to a Korean, we had the same points, and it was hard for me. I didnt medal. I was World Champion before, in 1997. All these years, I kept training very hard. My goal was to win the Olympic Games in Sydney, but I got only the bronze. Now I want the gold medal in Athens, and after the Olympic Games, I want to retire. I plan to go to the USA for studying. My second victory at Worlds is more important to me than my first one. I beat a Korean (Hyang-Soo KIM) earlier today who beat me at the Asian Games. It meant a lot to me.

Female- 55 kg
1. HA, Jeong-Yeon (KOR)
2. STONE, Taylor (USA)
3. ST.-JACQUES, Veronique (CAN)
3. NOOTCHARIN, Sukkhon (THA)

Jeong-Yeon HA (KOR), 2003 World Champion (Bantam -55 kg, female)
This is my first international competition. Now I am World Champion and I want to become Olympic Champion! There are so many athletes here and in the audience, it is really a top event at a high level. I didnt expect this. I lacked experience, but my coach and my teammates helped me with their experience and gave me advice. First of all I want to thank my family, especially my parents.

Male - 67 kg
1. Kang Nam-Won (KOR)
2. Lopez Mark (USA)
3. Aylanc Erdal (GER)
3. Pashayev Niyamaddin(AZE)

Nam Won KANG (KOR), 2003 World Champion (Feather -67 kg, male)
I am very satisfied, especially because the Korean team now is on top of the medal standings. I fought in another weight class at the last World Championships in 2001. (Bantam -62 kg) So it was harder for me this time, because the others were all taller than me. I felt from the very beginning that this would be a good day for me.

Female - 59 kg
1. Athanasopoulou Areti (GRE)
2. Salazar Iridia (MEX)
3. Hjortshoj Lise(DEN)
3. Reyes Sonia(ESP)

Areti Athanasopoulou (GRE), 2003 World Champion (Feather -59 kg, female)
I am so very happy to have won this first World title (for Greece. Greece never had a World title before). I cant even think clearly. All my matches today were hard, but when I went out for the Final, I was sure from the very first moment that I will win. I even saw it in my dream.

Male -72 kg
1. KIM, Kyo-Sik (KOR)
2. SAEI, Boneh Kohal Hadi (IRN)
3. CALISKAN, Tuncay (AUS)
3. AHMADOV, Rashad (AZE)

Kyo-Sik KIM (KOR), 2003 World Champion (light -72 kg).
I think it is regretful that I wasnt able to show a 100 percent in tonight's final. I am not completely satisfied with my performance. The reason is my lack of experience. I am participating in my first World Championships, I have been only to Junior Worlds before. So I didnt have much experience and I was nervous. My next goal are the Olympic Games (2004 in Athens). Now I want to become Olympic Champion.

Female -63 kg
1. KIM, Yeon-Ji (KOR)
2. SERGERIE, Karine (CAN)
3. MORGAN, Tina (AUST)
3. SUKHAVITSKAYA, Yulia (RUS)

Yeon-Ji KIM (KOR), 2003 World Champion (light -63 kg)
The final wasn't so good. I thought that my adversary (Karine SEVERINE of Canada) would be weaker. I never fought against her, I didn't know her. It was surprising that she made the final. Her technique is as good as mine. I wanted to show some nice technique in the final, but it was too risky. I really wanted to defend my title and I have trained hard for that. I consider Germany to be my home, as I grew up here. So I really wanted to be first here in Germany. There was a lot of pressure, maybe too much. Everyone here knows me and people expected a lot from me.

Male - 78 kg
1. LOPEZ, Steven (USA)
2. EBNOUTALIB, Mohamed (GER)
3. ALONSO, Rosendo (ESP)
3. OH, Seon-Taek (KOR)

Steven Lopez (USA), 2003 World Champion (Welter -78 kg, male)
I think I raised to the occasion. I kind of like pressure and just thank God first of all for this victory. I am just very happy that I could come here and win the World Championships again. (On waiting for the referee's decision) I had confidence because I was the one attacking and the one controlling the ring, so I had confidence that the decision would be mine. But the German fighter is very smart, and I had to be very careful, because with the crowd, any kick that he scored the crowd goes wild and it might tell the referees to score. So I was very cautious in that match. Any time I fight a fighter in his home country it's always more difficult, of course. I never fought against him before, and never against his brother (Faisal). But I know them, train with them, and we are very good friends and I am just happy that we could find the finals and have the victory.

Female - 78 kg
1. LEE, Sun-Hee (KOR)
2. SARIC, Sandra (CRO)
3. MISTAKIDOU, Elisavet (GRE)
3. NURKINA, Liya (KAZ)

Sun-Hee Lee (KOR), 2003 World Champion (Welter -67 kg, female)
My first fight was really difficult for me and I thought I would loose. But after I managed to win my first match, every fight felt like a final. I grew stronger from match to match. I am so happy to have won.

I had three rather easy and three very difficult fights. I fought against former World medallists. I am totally happy to have won tonight. I am especially happy about having won my next to last fight by KO and about having won the final against the very experienced Michael BOROT (FRA).

It was a good competition. My teammates helped me with their support, I could hear them while I was fighting. I think all my competitors today were hard to beat. I showed a good performance. I never fought against the French girl (in the final) before, I never saw her before. Now I am looking forward to going home and to rest. I will take ten days off. I am really missing my home!

When I had won, I fell down on to my knees. I am a Muslim and I believe in God. I didn't have much success in my life so far, and each time I need God, I pray to him, and ask for help. This time, God was with me, and I wanted to thank him. I am relatively new to this weight class. I just have 84 kg, and my opponents were heavier than me.

3. ZHONG, Chen (CHN)

It's the first World title for me. Last time (in 2001), I was eliminated in the preliminaries already. The two years since were long. Now I am so happy that I became World Champion. I still can't believe it.
